Ulaanbaatar is worth one or two full days. See Gandan Monastery in the morning, walk Sükhbaatar Square and the Chinggis Khaan National Museum, catch a traditional music and throat singing show in the evening, and finish with the view from the Zaisan Memorial. Stay in the centre, close to Sükhbaatar Square, because traffic makes everything else slow.
Quick answer: Day 1: Gandan Monastery, Sükhbaatar Square, the Chinggis Khaan National Museum and a traditional show. Day 2: Bogd Khan Palace Museum, Zaisan Memorial and the State Department Store, or a day trip to Terelj.

Markets and shopping
The State Department Store on Peace Avenue has a floor of Mongolian souvenirs, cashmere and felt goods at fixed prices. Naran Tuul, the huge open-air market often called the Black Market, sells everything from saddles to ger furniture, but it is crowded: keep your bag zipped and your phone in a front pocket (see is Mongolia safe?).
Where to stay
| Area | Best for | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Centre: Sükhbaatar Square and Peace Avenue | First visits, walking to sights, restaurants | Busier and noisier |
| Seoul Street and the State Department Store | Restaurants, bars and cafés | Weekend nightlife noise |
| Zaisan, in the south | Quieter stays, newer hotels, families | You need a taxi to the centre |
| Near the airport | Very early or late flights only | The airport is about 50 km south of the city |
Ulaanbaatar traffic is heavy at rush hour, so a central hotel saves hours. During Naadam in July, book months ahead.
Getting around
Taxis are inexpensive and ride-hailing apps are widely used. Walking is the easiest way to see the centre. At busy times allow at least 1 to 1.5 hours to the airport, or arrange a transfer with your private driver.
